Getting started
Underwater Hockey needs an iPhone running iOS 17 or later and plays in landscape. Open the app and pick a game from the home menu: Free swim to learn the controls on your own, 1 v 1, 3 v 3 or 6 v 6 against computer players with water referees, Camera rig to film a match from the pool wall, or Coach to watch plays from the playbook. Game settings sets the pool, the team formation, the game speed, the start signal and the language; Player sets your body type, stick hand and preferred position.
Touch controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Left thumb | Touch anywhere on the left side to place a thumbstick and swim. Push it all the way to sprint. |
| Right thumb drag | Look around and steer. In the water you swim where you look. |
| STICK | Tap to push the puck a short way. Hold and release to flick it through the water; the longer the hold (up to a second) the further it goes. Tap near an opponent who has the puck, when the button is outlined green, to steal it. |
| DIVE / RISE | Hold to swim down to the bottom or back up. Let go of both to hover. |
| VIEW | Switch between the mask view and the camera behind your player. |
| MENU | Pause, change settings, restart or end the game. |
Common questions
Why does my player swim back up on their own?
Like the real sport, the game is played on a single breath. The AIR gauge at the top left empties while you are underwater and fills again at the surface. When it runs out your player surfaces to breathe, so come up before it turns red.
I can't pick up the puck.
You need to be on the bottom of the pool, close to the puck, and the puck needs to have stopped moving. A puck that is still sliding or flying, or one somebody else is carrying, cannot be picked up; steal it with STICK instead.
After a goal nothing happens.
In 1 v 1, 3 v 3 and 6 v 6 play restarts the way a real match does: everyone swims back to their own wall, a referee returns the puck to the centre, and play starts on the buzzer (or the pipe, if you picked that signal). Your player swims to the wall by themselves during this time.
How do substitutions work?
In 3 v 3 and 6 v 6, swim into your team's substitution area along the side of the pool at the surface. A teammate comes on in your place. Press CALL SUB when you are ready to go back in, then swim out of the area once your teammate arrives.
The game is too fast for me.
Open MENU, then GAME SETTINGS, and drag GAME SPEED down. It goes as low as a quarter of normal speed and applies straight away.
How do I change the language?
The app follows your iPhone's language when it is one of the ten it supports (English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Japanese and Simplified Chinese). To pick another, open MENU, then GAME SETTINGS, then the LANGUAGE button.
My phone gets warm or the game stutters.
6 v 6 with three referees is the heaviest mode. Close other apps, turn off Low Power Mode, and try a 1 v 1 or 3 v 3 game or the outdoor pool. If it keeps happening, email the model of your iPhone and the mode you were playing.
How do I reset my settings?
Your settings are stored only on your phone. Deleting the app and installing it again from the App Store resets everything to the defaults.
Does the app collect any data or need the internet?
No. It has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no purchases, and it plays fully offline. See the Privacy Policy for details.
